Guidance Counselling in Note Dame
There is a comprehensive Guidance Counselling service available to all students in Notre Dame. The main objective is to support students to realise their potential and achieve their academic and career goals. Guidance is a whole-school activity and the Guidance Counsellor works closely with the Principal, teachers and parents. There are three main strands to the guidance service. These are educational guidance, vocational/career guidance and personal counselling.
In educational guidance, students are supported in choosing appropriate academic subjects. Students' interests, aptitudes and career goals are all taken into account. Vocational guidance is conducted both in class and in one to one counselling sessions. This process begins in first year and continues throughout their time in Notre Dame. Activities include aptitiude tests and interest assessments, study skills, exam techniques, visits to universities and colleges, information on careers, guest speakers from third level institutions, mock interviews and individual support with CAO, UCAS and PLC applications.
A professional and confidential counselling service in a safe environment is provided for all students. Students may self-refer or be referred by teachers or parents. Parental consent is always sought. If considered necessary, students may be referred on to appropriately qualified professionals.
